Part 2 — The Walk Through

Welcome to article number 2 about my journey of creating an AI powered taekwondo trainer! If you haven’t already, I would highly suggest you read part one before moving onto part two to better understand the technology behind this project. So in this article, we’re getting right to the point. No fluff.

What Can it Do?

The trainer is primarily designed to improve your sidekicks. The AI taekwondo trainer will count the number of sidekicks you do, while also making sure you do them right.

Let me walk you through it. When you do a sidekick it’s really important that you point your toes…

Did I mention that it’s personalized?

Has the pandemic had an impact on your ability to work out and train? I know for me it has. As someone who enjoys doing taekwondo in my free time, when the pandemic hit and everything closed, it also impacted my ability to train and learn taekwondo. Besides the considerable decrease in stamina and power, I noticed my techniques getting sloppier, my kicks getting lower, when they should have been getting higher and of course, forgetting my patterns.

Now, you may think there’s a very simple solution to the latter, just practice your patterns…duh…

The moonshot project that is changing our world.

To feed the world’s growing population, we must produce more food than the past 50 years combined. With climate change on the rise, our food supply is getting scarce. Our methods of farming today are not sustainable for a better tomorrow. And it’s certainly not sustainable for the estimated 8 million people by 2030.

The current commercial farming method consists of growing large amounts of a specific plant. This opens the door to pests, diseases and rotting food. Using chemicals to combat that ruins our soil, preventing any future crop growth. …

What did it mean when the teacher said, “But first I’m going to take the attendance”?

For a student, this sentence could mean many things. More time to talk to friends, a chance to “fix-up” yesterday’s homework or simply just a time to get settled into class.

Every day, the routine is the same. The teacher calls out each student’s name, checks the box beside the names of the absent students, sends the completed attendance to the school office and then proceeds with the lesson.

What’s the problem with this process? It’s time-consuming. How much time are we wasting when…

Navigating the world with my left hand.

As someone who writes with their left hand, I have heard a lot of weird things. From people telling me that I have been cursed to believing I will one day grow up to be an amazing musician, the list is endless. I don’t know about others, but I can tell you one thing for sure, music is definitely not my strong suit.

With only about 10% of the world being left-handed, it got me thinking…where did all these crazy myths come from and why was being left-handed looked down upon?

A Right-Handed World

While 90%…

You have probably come across one of these things in the past year.

I know I have. During the COVID pandemic, these thermometer guns have become an essential part of our lives. But, how do they actually work? I see these guns everywhere, but I’ve always wondered how they work. How can something tell my temperature without actually coming in contact with me?

Here’s how:

Infrared Radiation

This is the backbone of the thermometer gun. If there is no infrared radiation, the thermometer simply will not work. You see, every object has atoms moving within it. Now, unless you’re in absolute zero temperature, you have atoms moving within you too. Right now. …

A technical rundown of how your Google Home device works.

A wake word is a very small scale algorithm that activates a device when spoken. It can also be referred to as a “trigger word,” or “wake up word.” The wake word used to activate your Google assistant is “OK Google.” When the device hears the wake word, it begins recording, and you will see four circles on the top, this means the device is activated. The microphones also determine the direction the word comes from, so it can focus in that direction.

Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement learning. What is it and what does it do? In this article, you’ll get a basic rundown of what reinforcement learning is.

First, let’s start with a basic definition:

Reinforcement learning is an area of machine learning.

It involves software agents learning to navigate an uncertain environment to maximize reward. It learns from interactive experiences and uses feedback from its actions. Basically, the bot gets points for its actions. It can gain or lose points. The way agents learn through RL is identical to the way we, as humans learn.

Think of it like a video game where you…
